In particular, this problem came to a head during the recent Iraq conflict, when an unusually large number of media personnel became casualties while attempting to report from conflict zones.
In response to an escalating climate of risk, the International News Safety Institute was set up in 2003. The Institute is essentially a coalition of media organisations, press freedom groups, unions and humanitarian campaigners, working to create a culture of safety for the news-gathering organisations of the free world.
The Institute is led and managed by media professionals and Blue Sky has been engaged to provide strategic security advice, and assistance on safety training .
Blue Sky is working closely with the Institute to help it achieve its security objectives, including the provision of safety and support programmes for all news media workers involved in hazardous assignments; dissemination of relevant safety and survival information and advice; and promotion of best practice in safety training. |
